Ask the Funerals Expert – Rod Attwell

To make certain that proper cremation procedures are followed at all times, Oliver’s Funeral Home owns and operates its own crematorium – the only one in the Peace Country. This ensures that your loved one never leaves our care, giving us all peace of mind. Remember cremation is not an alternative to a funeral, but rather an alternative to burial.

Here are some of the frequently asked questions regarding cremations:

Is a casket needed for Cremation?

Yes, some sort of casket is required. This may be a simple cardboard or plywood to veneer or hardwood caskets. At Oliver’s we offer a variety of options for cremations caskets.

Is embalming required prior to cremation?

No. However at Oliver’s we may recommend embalming if there is an extensive visitation or viewing.

Can the body be viewed without embalming?

Yes – within normal circumstances.

Can the family witness the cremation?

Yes you can, since Oliver’s owns and operates their own crematorium this is possible.

What can be done with the cremated remains?

While laws vary from province to province, for the most part remains can be buried in a cemetery lot or a cremation garden, interred in one of Oliver’s columbariums located at either Grande Prairie Cemetery or Beaverlodge Cemetery, kept at home or scattered.

How long does the actual cremation take?

It all depends on the weight of the individual. For an average sized adult, cremation usually takes three to four hours.

Are all the cremated remains returned?

With the exception of minute and microscopic particles, which are impossible to remove from the cremation retort and processing machine, all of the cremated remains are given back to the family.

Do I need an urn?

An urn is not required by law. However, if no urn is selected or provided by the family then the cremated remains will be placed in a minimum basic urn provided by our crematorium.
